Modelo de identificación individual del jaguar Panthera onca (Linnaeus, 1758) por morfometría de huellas

Resumen

Un impedimento para el estudio de macro mamíferos puede ser la imposibilidad que tienen estos de ser observados, debido sus bajas densidades y dificultad en capturarlos, entre otras variables. En la búsqueda de otros métodos que superen estas limitaciones, se han descrito técnicas que aprovechan los signos dejados por los animales al deambular en su hábitat. Los rastros, se definen como una señal o indicio que dejan los seres vivos durante sus actividades, incluyendo toda reliquia o vestigio que quede de ellos.

Enumerar el tamaño de una población depende de distinguir entre los distintos individuos que la componen. En el caso de los grandes depredadores, que son escasamente distribuidos, crípticos, nocturnos o crepusculares, y a menudo solitarios, dificulta el conteo y al mismo tiempo el poder discriminarlos. Para solucionar esto existen técnicas de campo y métodos de análisis cuantitativos que están siendo implementados para identificar los individuos por medio de signos tales como huellas.

La morfometría geométrica aplicada al rastreo, es un método no invasivo, el cual utiliza e interpreta las evidencias indirectas de los animales a través de sus rastros, convirtiéndose en una metodología complementaria para el estudio de los mamíferos, principalmente de especies cripticas o que habitan en bajas densidades poblacionales.

En esta investigación, haciendo uso de todas las técnicas necesarias para la identificación y colección de rastros, además de la utilización de análisis multivariados y morfométricas, ayudo a estimar la abundancia del Jaguar (Panthera onca) en el Parque Nacional Natural Los Katíos Colombia (en el Choco biogeográfico).

Se evaluaron trampas huella, las cuales son utilizadas en los diferentes ecosistemas por su fácil implementación y bajo costo en el monitoreo, con el fin de evaluar el mejor sustrato para su uso y ser utilizado en el levantamiento de la información, posteriormente se realizaron las campañas de campo, con un total de 1080 horas de esfuerzo muestrial, donde se logró el registro 22 especies de mamíferos terrestres y mediante la combinación de los métodos de rastreo y el uso de análisis morfométricos de huellas se logró identificar cuatro individuos de Jaguar en el área, estos análisis morfométricos permiten obtener registros confiables para la identificación de individuos de jaguar.

Los datos basados en análisis multivariados posibilitaron su uso con éxito y se presentan como una herramienta necesaria para mejorar el reconocimiento de rastros, tamaños poblacionales de mamíferos, selección del hábitat y la estructura social. Estos datos al combinarse con otros métodos como el foto-trampeo, la telemetría o los análisis genéticos por medio de pelos y heces, podrían generan información precisa para la conservación de mamíferos silvestres en Neotrópico.

Resumen

The study of macro mammals is impeded by the difficulty in observing them, due to their low densities and difficulty in capturing them, among other variables. In the search for other methods that overcome these limitations, techniques have been described that take advantage of the traces left by the mammals when wandering in their habitat. Traces are defined as a sign or sign left by living beings during their activities, including all the relic or vestige that remains of them.

Enumerating the size of a population depends on distinguishing between different animals. In the case of macro-mammals, these are poorly distributed, cryptic, nocturnal or crepuscular, and often solitary, which makes it difficult to count all individuals in a population and at the same time to discriminate between them. For this, field techniques and analysis methods have been developed that are being implemented to identify individual animals by means of traces such as their fingerprints; these tools use the quantitative properties of traces found allowing differentiation between individuals.

The geometric morphometry applied to tracking, is a non-invasive technique, which uses and interprets the indirect evidence of animals through their traces, transforming in a complementary technique for the study of mammal distribution and population size, mainly of cryptic species or those at low population densities.

In this investigation, making use of all the necessary techniques for the identification and collection of traces, in addition to the use of multivariate and morphometric analyzes, allowed is to estimate the population size of the Jaguar (Panthera onca) in the Los Katíos Colombia National Natural Park, in the Choco biogeographic.

Footprint traps were evaluated, which are used in the different ecosystems due to their easy implementation and low cost in monitoring, in order to evaluate the best substrate for their use and to be used in the gathering of information. Field sampling was carried out, with a total of 1080 hours of sampling effort, where 22 species of terrestrial mammals were registered. Through the combination of tracking methods and the use of morphometric analysis of footprints, it was possible to identify four individuals of Jaguar in the area, these morphometric analyzes allowed the obtainment of reliable records for the identification of jaguar individuals.

Data based on multivariate analyzes enabled its successful use and are presented by this study as a necessary tool to improve the recognition of mammal traces, enumerate their population size, habitat selection and social structure. Combining the data with other techniques such as photo trapping, telemetry or genetic analysis by means of hair and feces, could generate accurate information for the conservation of wild mammals in the Neotropics.
