Somos un mismo pueblo con culturas diversas

Sumario: This work is a comparative analysis of Macunaíma, a romance written by Mário de Andrade, and the homonimous cinematografic translation made by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade. The main objective of our research is to deal with the differences and similarities in the dialogues, and their symbolic systems, literature and cinema. Macunaíma, a work by Mário de Andrade, was a reference in 20th century Brazilian Literature, being considered as a modern work, which brings a critical view into the predecessor Brazilian literature of your time and the people in it, which were used to be unchained in the national tradition and in its ethnical origins. In the collections of Mario s works, this book is distinct by being a transfiguration of Brazil, in forms and aspects involving our national traces. Even if Mário de Andrade hadn t had the intention of transform his romance in an interpretation or a symbol of the Brazilian culture, Macunaíma means search and discovery, and in a certain way, it is a genuine interpretation of Brazil and its posterior potentialities. Thus Mário de Andrade, in his creation, updates the Indian myths in a self-appropriation, Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, in the cinema, finds the respective contemporary dimensions of our people s hero . In the film, for example, the subjugation of Brazil by the dictatorial system is a recurrent sign. In the first chapter, our incursion is to observe the need to contextualize the cannibalism as a project of a translation and a critical reading our western heritages; Secondly, to analyze the possibility of update brought by the Cinema Novo, priorizing an approach of similarities and contrasts between the subsequent Macunaíma, in the second chapter.
